The Government of Alberta recently released its survey for the second phase of their curriculum overhaul along with suggestions for the content of each subject. Upon examining the suggestions for "Wellness Education — Health and Physical Education," it is clear that the government and those in charge of the curriculum reform did not take anything Right2Know has said into consideration. These "suggestions" lack information about consent and sexual violence—two key things Minister David Eggen said that he agreed should be included in the curriculum when I met with him last summer. I also presented at the Expert Working Group for the Wellness curriculum reform, but got no feedback about how my presentation was received.
In the Health and Physical Education Scope and Sequence document, the topic of consent is mentioned 4 times under the Essential Understanding "Access to quality health information and various social and cultural factors have an impact on the personal choices that we make, which can influence the health and well-being of self and others." Consent is mentioned in only four times for grades 6 to 9. Sexual assault is mentioned under the Essential Understanding "Knowing one’s self and various facets of health and well-being can help to develop a balanced lifestyle" for grade 9. The "suggestions" for grades 10-12 have no mention of consent or sexual assault whatsoever. This is unacceptable and needs to be changed.
The relevant suggestions pertaining to sexual health and wellness (found on pages 10-18 in the document) have been attached below.
The document outlining the rationale for Wellness Education is also lacking in information about consent and sexual abuse/assault. There is no mention of anything relating to consent or bodily autonomy.
These documents have set the stage for what the new curriculum will contain. If there is presently no mention of consent and sexual violence for these grade levels, then they will likely not be seen in the final curriculum. This is unacceptable and needs to change.
We need your help. Take the online survey and write to your MLA and the Minister of Education about the importance of including the topics of consent and sexual violence for all grade levels.
As always, thank you so much for your involvement. We couldn't do this without you.
Correction: the original post had originally referred to the "suggestions" for the new curriculum as "learning outcomes." The final learning outcomes have not yet been created and we do not yet know when that will be done.
